The Harp in the South

This emotionally charged, romantic mini-series follows the life and times of an Irish-Australian family in the aftermath of World War II.

“Surry Hills used to be full of Irish people. You’d know that by the names of the streets – Ryan and Murphy and Riley and Fahy – and Crown that used to be a cattle track called Kelleher.

Poor decent devils, they came out here looking for streets cobbled with gold and found them made of stone as hard as a landlord’s heart.

So they ended up in Surry Hills – not because they were dirty or lazy, though many of them were that, but because they were poor. And where you find the poor you’ll find the money-grabbers who put up tenements – cramming two hovels on a piece of land the size of a handkerchief and letting them for the rent of four.

Yes, you could say Surry Hills has a bad name, a dirty name. Things happen here that chill the blood. Criminals, oh, yes. But if they hide here from the law they know they’re safe. Loyalty, you see, though maybe out of place. But the others, the simple ones like the Darcy's, they have loyalty too. Kindness. Charity, you could call it.

I can tell you, that if I were ever down and out, I’d come to Surry Hills.”
